Campaign for Nature Applauds President Lula’s Historic Pledge for Tropical Forest Finance
NEW YORK (23 September 2025): Today, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced that Brazil would contribute US$1 billion to the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF), becoming the first nation to contribute to the new fund designed to incentivize the long-term protection of tropical forests around the world.
In response to this announcement, Brian O’Donnell, Director of the Campaign for Nature, issued the following statement:
“Tropical forests support two-thirds of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. Conserving tropical forests prevents species extinctions, helps mitigate climate change, and supports livelihoods around the world.”
“Currently, the world is not on track to meet its climate and biodiversity goals. The biggest barrier to progress is a huge finance gap that will only be closed by significant and sustained political leadership.”
“President Lula and the Brazilian government are demonstrating exactly the type of leadership that the world needs by pledging $1 billion of funding and leading the development of a new fund that will support countries, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities who conserve their tropical forests. Other world leaders should now join Brazil and invest in this essential fund.”
“We applaud President Lula and the Brazilian government for their commitment and urge countries around the world to make similar pledges as we approach COP30 in Belem. This could be the world’s last, best chance to develop a financial solution at the necessary scale to conserve tropical forests, meet our climate targets, and protect some of the most important natural areas left in the world.”
